How it Works
The making of your coins
Here is a step-by-step explanation of how your coins are made, from raw material to finished product:

1. Coin design
Purpose: Determine the visual and technical design.
Based on the input from our client, our design team creates 2D and 3D sketches of both the front and back of the coin. These may include elements such as a company logo, image, portrait, symbol, text, denomination, and/or year.
The design is presented in a greatly enlarged format (often 5 to 10 times larger than the actual coin) to allow for detailed elaboration.
During this phase, Coinholland works closely with the client with the goal of achieving a visually and technically perfect design.
After approval, our design team digitally prepares the artwork (in 2D or 3D) to make it suitable for engraving the die (mould).
2. Engraving the die (mould)
Purpose: Create a metal die with the coin design.
The enlarged 2D or 3D design is scaled down using a pantograph machine or modern CNC (Computer Numerical Control) technique. A positive mould in steel is then created.
Next, a negative die is produced – this is the actual mould used in the coin press.
The dies are:
Precisely processed (using diamond tools or lasers)
Hardened (heated and rapidly cooled), so they can be used thousands of times without wearing out
The design is engraved into the steel with great precision or applied using a computer-controlled milling machine.
3. Metal preparation
Purpose: Prepare the raw material for coin striking.
Large metal sheets are produced from the chosen material (e.g., iron, copper, nickel, zinc, or an alloy).
Round blanks are punched out of these sheets in the correct format (weight, thickness, and diameter) for the final coin. These blanks are then washed, dried, and optionally annealed (heated and cooled) to make them more workable.
4. Coin striking
Purpose: Apply the design to the coins.
The blanks are placed in a press machine. Under high pressure, the dies imprint the design onto both sides of the coin.
Depending on the design, the coin can then be color-filled (enameled). Enamel is a glaze made from molten glass; it is both scratch- and corrosion-resistant.
Optionally, an edge inscription or reeded edge can be added during this step.
5. Quality control
Purpose: Approve only perfectly struck coins.
Each coin is inspected for errors such as misprints, off-center strikes, or irregular shapes. Rejected coins are removed and melted down.
6. Packaging and distribution
Purpose: Prepare the coins for shipment.
The approved coins are carefully packaged and shipped worldwide to our clients on behalf of Coinholland.
Coinholland Business Coin
Business cards remain indispensable – even in the digital age. At business meetings, trade shows, and events, cards are still enthusiastically exchanged, carrying valuable contact information.
The origin of the business card, as we know it, dates back to the 15th century. In China, so-called Meisha cards were used to announce a visit. European merchants adopted this custom in the 17th century, where it quickly became common practice.

Cases & inspiration
Axacars Business Coin
Development of the Axacars Business Coin. Axacars is a well-established car company based in Zoetermeer, the Netherlands. The company is known for its excellent service and expertise in car repair and maintenance. In addition, Axacars sells second-hand vehicles of various brands and in a wide range of price categories.
Axacars approached Coinholland with a request to create a distinctive design that reflects the services offered by the company in a business coin, also incorporating a reference to the website.
Coinholland based the design on the corporate colors of the Axacars website. The logo, which includes a gear, screwdriver, and wrench, symbolizes the company’s core activities: car repair and maintenance. An integrated QR code provides a direct link to the company’s website.
Coinholland – The story
The idea for Coinholland came about during an inspiring trip to the United States. Together with a childhood friend who worked for the Dutch Police Union, I was invited by the New York Police Department (NYPD). We were warmly welcomed and participated in various (police) activities. It was an experience I will never forget.
When we left, we received a gift from the chief commissioner: a box containing several so-called challenge coins. These coins made a deep impression on me. Each one had beautiful, detailed designs and was made with exceptional quality. To me, these coins are comparable to jewelry – objects that you like to look at and sometimes hold in your hand.
In the United States, these coins symbolize solidarity within the armed forces, police and fire brigade. Back in the Netherlands, I decided to continue this American tradition here, but with a unique commercial approach. When I founded Coinholland, I gathered a team of professionals around me with great dedication.
Coinholland aims to introduce people to our high-quality coins, which can be used both professionally and privately as a souvenir, token of appreciation or special gift.
Feel free to contact us and be inspired by the many applications that our premium coins offer.
Kind regards,
Alexander van Baarlen – owner Coinholland
